Trail Sprinting up Hills with my Trainer Iris

Sometimes we need to get off our bikes and hit the hills on foot to incorporate some hill running for increased hill climbing ability on our bikes. When we run up hills, we ask our legs to create power through a greater range of motion than what we would experience while cycling. This greater range of motion is because when running up hills we bring our knees higher and extend our hips further than we do while cycling. This trains our legs to produce more force near the top and bottom ranges of the pedal strokes. During hill running we are targeting the anaerobic energy system (energy produced without the need of oxygen). This type of training helps us charge up steep hills faster, not just increase your aerobic capacity, VO2max, (the energy derived from the utilization of oxygen). This hill running training is interval training and will ask you to work at a high percentage of your aerobic capacity for short bouts of time than your normal running or cycling pace. What to do: Most people may find it easier to count steps rather than watch their time when doing all out effort. Thus find a hill that takes about 60 or so steps to climb and sprint as fast as you can up the hill. Depending on your training level, rest by going back down (60 to 120 seconds) and repeat 5 to 10 times. Cycling is great low impact exercise and a great way to get out and have fun. However, weight-bearing exercise is an important aspect of a well balanced healthy lifestyle because of the muscle and …
